So far my tank has been absolutely thriving (about a month now) and I'm about to fully stock it.

Current stock:
1x Bristlenose
10x Neon Tetra
6x Kuhli Loach

Planned additions:
7x Cherry Barbs
10x Melon Barbs or Sawbwa resplendens (burmese rummynose)
15x Red Cherry shrimp
5x Glass Catfish

So that gives me a good ecosystem of bottom and mid dwellers but nothing really for the surface. I was looking at butterflyfish in the stores and they seem really interesting, but would the barbs cause a problem with fin nipping? Or will he eat the tetras?

Thanking you

What size is your tank? and is it fully cycled?

I know nothing about melon barbs but cherry barbs are one of the most docile fish you can buy.

Don't think that all barbs are nippy - some tetras are extremely nippy but plenty aren't

And have a look at this link, from a quick read Butterfly fish require slow moving water, and should not be kept with fin nipping or aggressive fish, so I would say a butterfly fish is not suitable to keep with your planned stocking.

Tank is 220L, fully cycled and well established now. Was cycled for a couple of months before the first fish went in. The fish all seem extremely happy and personable.

It will be a bit overstocked, but only just and the tank is overfiltrated, with a 500L/H inbuilt filter and a 1300L/H external filter to be added. That will do until I can plumb the tank into the mains water to do automatic water changes.

@Livewire- that's what I had read, I just didn't know if those fish were fin nippers. The tetras always hang near the bottom so wouldn't bother him. It's the barbs I'm most worried about.

Cool I would assume the flow will be prety decent if your tank is overfiltered so the Butterfly fish may not like a high flow rate.

Yea its adjustable though, and not right at the surface, but yea it could definitely be a problem for its certainly not still water
