Hi all,

I have a 500 litre community tank with 2 Brichardis, 2 Kribs and 2 Angel Fish, various tetras and some guppies & Mollies,

I moved the tank around about 7 days ago, (bogwood, plants etc..) and to my shock last night... I discovered some fry... turns out the Brichardis have been busy! This was so unexpected, and now knowing they are a breeding pair I may set them up in there own tank... just have to wait for the mrs to go out till I can set it up!! What size tank would be suitable for a pair?

I have a few questions.

1) will the Brichardis kill my other community fish? (generally speaking they are harmless to the others)
2) what chance do the fry have to survive? the parents are very protective over the area of tank they are in)
3) would it be best to try to remove them and put them in there own tank?

Than you!!

1. First off brichardi shouldnt be keep with your normal community fish though ive seen shops selling them like this. If its working then fair enough.
2. You should have fry survive. As you said the parents are very pretective and if they have places to hide in im sure some will be ok.
3. Would be a good idea. In tanganikan communities they are quite renowned for killing everything in the tank as the harem starts growing. the parents will protect the young and when the young start to grow up they will protect the new lot. So id just keep an eye on everything and see what happens. Your tank is quite big so you might be alright for a long while yet but its something to bear in mind. cheers

Thanks for that. I got advised by 3 local stores that with the size of the tank it will be fine. I will wait until they are a tiny bit bigger, I think I would miss some if I tried while they are this small..

they would kill or try to kill community fish as they are very protective, maybe ok with angels although they would try to eat fry and could also cause problems, I used to keep them in a 2ft tank with no problems
