I plan on setting up a tank incase some of my cichlids and/or my tetras. My tetras are showing spawning behaviour and some of the females appear to be full of eggs. I want to know what a good set up is and whether I could have any other fish in there (e.g. Otocinclus, Pygmy Corydoras) to keep down algae and eat some of the food that falls to the bottom. I would not want a bare bottom as I would like the tank to look nice, this is because it will be in my bedroom. The dimensions of the tank I have are: Length - 45, Width - 30, Height 23cm. Can anyone recommend some basic things needed when looking after fry (food, substrate, decor etc.). Also if you could show pictures of your breeding set-ups.

Thank you,

Hi
My breeding tank is 24"x12"x12" and the bottom is covered in marbles and it has a foam filter, this set up has given good results with Zebra Danios, Leopard Danios and at the moment White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Tetras are egg scatterers so the marbles will allow the eggs to fall between them stopping the parents from eating them. As for the Chilids I currently have a pair of Kribs in another tank, these like caves to lay their eggs in so there are coconut shells in there for them but they are only practicing at the moment!!!

Ok, I have heard about marbles just didn't know how well they worked. I don't plan on breeding them it's more of a 'just incase'. The cichlids I have are Cryptoheros Cutteri, and, although only a very recent purchase, they are known to be prolific breeders - apparently. I would love to have 1 or 2 spawns as my other tank could do with a nice pair of cichlids and any 'free money' from my LFS to spend on equipment would be a nice bonus. Do you have any ideas on breeding them? I was thinking silver sand, twiggy bogwood, half a terracota pot and some oak leaves. Most of it would be just for something to look at but I assume they would still breed.

Thanks for the help,
