I've very limited in regards of space but I'm aware that I need a separate tank for quarantine and hospital duty. Also, I'm hoping to try and get some fry from my Rams and possibly pygmy corys.

So my question is this - would a 14"x8"x8" tank be ok for these duties? Its only about 15 litres but that's all the space I have. I'm planning on having it in the stand of my 90 litre cube with a 25w heater and a little sponge pump for filteration (I've stuffed said sponge in the back of my main tanks filter to mature)

What is everyone's thoughts? Also should I put substrate in it or leave it bare with just a few plastic plants and half a flower pot etc?

I tend to think of 5.5Gs as the smallest Qtanks but really a Qtank just has to meet the needs of the number and size fish you intend to quarantine. Since its really better to just have patience and only add 2 or 3 smaller fish at a time, and you won't be adding any very big ones anyway, I think the 4G sounds do-able. It'll be tight handling your gravel cylinder and yes, I don't see why a Qtank shouldn't be a nice little tank with gravel, perhaps a decoration and perhaps having its only compromise being no major top light and no real plants. Mine has a glass top and there's just a simple desk study lamp I can snap on to tell them that feeding time is coming up (they learn fast  just put a new batch in at the beginning of this week!)
