I bought some bog wood today which I plan on adding to my tank along with a plant when my cycle is complete.

I have put it to soak outside untill the tank is ready for it. I have noticed that it is floating, I thoight the whole idea was that this stuff didnt float.

Have I been ripped off & been sold some balsa or somthing ;) or is this normal?

While soaking it will get water logged and then sink :)

If not just buy some of the plant weights and put it around the wood :)

i just recently brought some new wood, and 3 weeks later its still leeching. 2 weeks outside but its in the tank now. leeches quicker in warmer water, and if youre doing water changes anyway in a cycling tank it doesnt matter how the water looks.

If you have a large enough pot you could boil it on the stove. I just got some bogwood last night, boiled it, and put it in a bucket overnight but it doesn't seem like it leaked any tannins out in the bucket. Boil for 15 minutes seems the magic number.

or add some carbon to your filter, it'll soon soak up the tannins. If your feeling a bit more exuberant, buy some Purigen by Seachem. It lasts longer than carbon, and IMO one of the best mechanical filter mediums on the market at the min.

I have it soaking outside in a clean washing up bowl full of treated tap water. I dont have a big enough pot to boil it so soaking is the only realistic option.

can you post a pic of it? There is wood that isn't suitable for aquariums.

Cant post a pic right now (at work). It should be ok as I bought it from pets at home. Labled as Bog Wood with instructions about soaking & planting on the label.

ok cool.. :good: i soaked my bogwood piece (bought from pets@home) for a week and it stopped floating.. tannins stopped about 6 months after

It is now happily submerged & the tannins are leaching out into the bowl quite well.

tannins are actually good for some fish. Some people just don't like them and prefer crystal clear water. Eg, fish such as most tetra and corydora who naturally inhabit such stained water with a softer and acidic property.

my wood is still leaching in my tank and to be honest i quite like it.it doesnt look murky or unclear, its crystal clear, but its got an orangey tint. i suspect it looks like it would if i had a slightly orange bulb in the light. it wil eventually go clear as it stops leaching and water changes remove the tannin, but im not fussed by it at all.

Ok my wood is well & truly waterlogged now. Looking at it I would like to break it in half lengthways so I get two bits to plant on. Anyone attempted this? If so how would I go about it?

a very small axe would be perfect, otherwise a chisel or flat head screw driver and a hammer. make sure you go with the grain and not try to cut against it. the two pieces might want another soak bfore putting them in th tank
