Are the German blue rams suitable for a calm community tank??

Yes, sort of.  I saw your other thread (I'll be posting therein momentarily) so I know this is a 55g tank.

German blue rams are a man-made colour variety of the natural species Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.  Males are naturally territorial (like all cichlids), and depending upon the individual fish they can be mild to very aggressive in defending their space.  This is toward each other, but can also extend to females and other fish species, primarily but not exclusively those on or near the substrate.  I'll have more on this in the other thread.

Rams will readily spawn, but they have to select their mates.  Not any male/female "pair" will work.  If you're not interested in raising the fry, this won't matter, but unfortunately a male that rejects a female, and vice versa, can literally hound the other to death, even in large spaces.  So if you do decide on a "pair," observe the fish in the store tank very closely for quite a time and you should be able to spot the bonded pairs.  The males will be continually challenging each other with fins flared, and the females will tend to be the less coourful and quieter fish among them.  A female that is tolerated close to one of the males will likely be accepted.

The other issue is temperature; the common or blue ram, whatever the colour variety, is a warm water fish, warmer than many of the tropicals.  I'll expand on this in the other thread.

Byron.
