So I've done a decent amount of research on blackwater aquariums, as I breed Apistogramma Cacatouides which are historically a somewhat sensitive fish and come from a blackwater environment.

Here are some of the pros:
1. Natural looking (in my mind, always a benefit)
2. Research indicates that water containing tannins and other trace elements may help prevent/speed the cure of bacterial infections
3. As leaves (Catappa for instance) decay, they host all types of bacteria and other organisms which are an excellent food source for fry.

This website has a lot of good info on it - you could easily spend hours going through their blog posts.
