My tank showed signs of white spot several days ago, nothing major only a few (say 4 or 5) telltale spots. A day later the spots had gone (I’m assuming dropped off) and some of the fish lost their appetite and my Gourami kept trying to brush something off his side.
I decided to treat with a Malachite Green/Formalin medicine I purchased. I would have liked to use the salt method but I have some Panda Cory’s and I hear they’re very sensitive to salt. I also upped the temps a couple of degrees to 28C to speed up the ichs life cycle. I’ve heard the Pandas don’t like too much heat either so I couldn’t use the heat method I’ve read about.
I left it overnight and this morning 3 of my tetras were gulping at the top of the tank in distress.
I’ve increased my aeration by adding an air stone (I had already increased my filter power before medicating) and also changed 20% water before setting off to work.
I’ve now read certain tetra’s can be affected by malachite green so should I remove more water and to make it half a dose?
My water parameters were OK before dosing.
pH:7.6
ammonia:0
nitrite:0
kH:6
gH:16
Nitrate around 40 (it’s always 40 as I have a high level in my tap water).
Stock:
6 Black Phantoms
4 infant Panda Corydoras
1 Dwarf Gourami
Tank is 60L with a HOB filter (cycled) and a new canister filter.
The tank is fairly new and cycled although one of my filter cartridges contained charcoal. I cut this open and removed the charcoal but I’m concerned this will affect my cycle now.
I added a canister filter over the weekend but this won’t be off much help yet as it’s so new.
I’m not sure if I should have started treatment or not now as it’s hurting my tetras and the problem wasn’t bad?
Should I discontinue the current treatment?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
