As it is bank holiday in the UK and I got nothing better to do in this frightful weather I have been wondering how bettas sleep. As they are labyrinth fish, they need to go up for air, so how the heck to they snooze? I have never seen my betta sleep yet, he seems to be awake non-stop when I am awake.

I hope someone can enlighten me.

as far as I know they just sit on somethign and drop off then go up to the surface if they need air. I've seen mine sleep a couple times, he'll lodge himself between leaves so he isn't blown off or he'll sit on a leaf or the floor in a quieter spot

No fish "sleeps" Fish usually go to the top of the tank (platys, and other fish like that) or sit in a cave/bridge (catfish and other bottom dwellers) and rest. In this period all there body slows down. Heart rate, breathing ect. They also become in a trance in a way. Ive checked on newly brought home fish in the middle of the night and they wont even know you turned the light on, but they arent asleep lol. My betta wraps himself in amazon sword leaves and rests.

My betta often lougnes on the top of his plant, so maybe this is where he rests at night as he can breathe air from there.

Yes, the trance is really weird. I have noticed it a lot with my platies and tetras, it's like they are in another place. But as I said, I have never seen my betta 'sleep' hence I was wondering.

One of my males floats around on the surface when he is resting, the other male sits in-between plant leafs and rests there.

Although a betta is a labyrinthine fish, it normally does not need to breathe atmospheric air. Mine sleeps in my endler tank the same way the endlers and bristlenose plecos do. He finds a spot he likes and dozes off. When the lights come on in the morning, usually when I walk into the room, he wakes up.
