hi
i have had a male betta fish for 5 months now and with in the last month the fish has started to act quite lazy ...just hanging about drapped over an internal thermometer ...i put this down to the increased tempeture due to a hot 3 or 4 weeks...but with in the last few days i have noticed that he is hardly eating anything and has a swollen gill on the right side of his body...also his colour is very dark...

i took him out of the tank and mocked up a isolation tank for him and treated him with an anti crustation parasite remover i also added aqualibrium salt to aid his recovery...(25-50% daily water changes).(this was recommened to my by the fish store...) but as yet he has'nt improved....treatment is now in the 3rd day..with the medacation having bee added on the first day..approx 2ML for the i gallon tank....

also my 3 clown loches are starting to flash...i think ( propelling their bodies sideways onto rocks to rub their gills...)

can anybody help or point me in the right direction to resolve these issues as i think the 2 are linked....
algae is also a new problem...i have started to find red beard algea

i preform 25% water changes (treated) on a weekly basis....

tank setup

70L tank
planted
fish....11 cardinal tetras...3 clown loches.....2 simease fighting fish..(1 male...1 female)...2 siamease algae eaters...(to sort out the beard algae)......1 rio para plec catfish....(L75)....

That sucks.. I don't know what's wrong with your betta, but you should keep him separated. Male and female bettas don't belong together unless you reeeeeeally know what you're doing and have inspected their personalities.. it's a real hard thing, not that it can't be done but it shouldn't be common and you shouldn't have them together.

I don't really know much about the other fish but the loaches could be coming down with ich?

no they get along fine ...first few days i had him in a floating fish hatchery so he could get used to her,and aslo it gives her time to find a sleeping place... then they were fine ...every so often he had to go back(inside so to speak) if he got a bit boisterous...now they get on fine .... she is actually missing him i think...

Hmm.... well if you say so.. I would think the more likely outcome of keeping him in a cage inside the tank would be that he gets pumped up for breeding and when you release him he beats the crap out of her :p But whatever you say.
