Hi everyone, so I have had my Betta fish for approximately 5-6 weeks now and I have noticed a change in tail shape.

When I first got him he as a square shape notch in his back tail and it was very smooth and I think just part of his build. However I have since noticed it has changed to a long triangle that nearly goes to the actual body of the fish. It isn’t red but it is slightly ragged.

At the moment I have 2 Norman lampeyes and I haven’t witnessed any fin nipping at all.
I just wanted to put this here to see if anyone had an ideas on what it could be and how to fix it? I have attached pictures aswell.

For context, I have a silk plant in the aquarium and also a temple monument with hard plastic plants sticking out-he likes to sleep on those. He also loves to sit by the filter so maybe the filter is sucking the fins up and damaging them?

I have attached the pictures, the first one is the day we got him and the last two were taken this morning.

Thankyou!! Id be so appreciative if anyone could help :)

Hello!

thankyou so much! I was worried he was catching it on something :( so even though he didn’t have this split when I bought him is it just that he has grown into it? thanks!

Hi everyone!

I did a post a few days ago and my poor bettas fins have gotten worse.
I have had her about two months and she was fine, her fins were beautiful and healthy.
In the past week or so I noticed her back fin looked ripped. She used to have a slight square notch out her fin and now it has turned into a ragged triangle. Also her top fin is now ripped too. She is housed with 2 Norman lampeyes at the moment and they all seem happy together and I have seen no fin nipping or aggression.

I would really love some advice or answers on what’s going on? Her fins always had a white outline however this has become bigger and her colours aren’t so vibrant and her fins are ragged. She does love to sit by he filter so it could be that? she’s still swimming and eating perfectly.
I have attached a before and after picture. THANKYOU!!

Bettas should not be placed with other fish no mattter what, they do much better on their own without any other fish and they are aggressive fish.
Wipe the glass inside the tank, vacuum the substrate and do a 75% and put in 1-2 heaped table spoons of aquarium salt per 20 litres for 2 weeks. I know I'm wrong so wait for @Colin_T . I would give away the lampeyes and leave the betta on his own in the tank.

Bettas aren't community fish, and shouldn't be kept as such.

Even if you don't see any aggression, it could still be happening. I would remove the Betta and give him a smaller home to himself, or, remove the other two fish.

To fix the fins, do large 40%-50% water changes per day, until things improve.

Will you please upload a picture of the filter? It could be what's causing issues. If you think it is, cover the intake (the part where water is sucked in) with panty hose.
