Hey guys! Just recently revived my "pet" craze! Been keeping lizards lately, but wanted to get into freshwater fish.

My question to you guys (Although I'm sure you get this a lot, so I do apologize) is about compatibility.

I started with just a basic tank, 4 gallons, with two goldfish. Went to my local shop, they had told me that tetras would be fine and compatible with them. So, I bought 4 of em (two albino pristella tetras and 2 red-eyes). Had em in the tank (Running with a filter, no heater) for about a month before I wanted to expand and make use of my living space.

Just purchased a 10 Gallon tank about 3 weeks ago, finished cycling it and bought some guppies to put in (yes it now has a heater)

Can i put the goldfish in with the bunch, or do I really harm them by putting it in a heated-tank?
Do I really have to have the tank with just the goldfish alone?

Thanks a lot fellas, can`t wait to check here more often!

goldfish shouldn't be in a heated tank, they also get very big and messy so you really want a 20g tank for 2 of them i'm afraid.

Move the tetras, aand get a 20 or 30 gallon for the goldfish.

I can't believe a pet store said that tetras could go in a cold water tank! Surely that's basic?

its all about the $$$$$$$$$$£££££££££££££££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$£££££££££££££$$$$$$$$$$$$$£££££££££££££

they could be white cloud mountain minnows for all we know

I thought we had pretty well settled on 30G for the first plain goldfish(bi-tail), 10G more for each succeeding. And 20G for the first fancy goldfish(tri-tail), 10G more for each succeeding. This is if you're not going to put them in a pond. (???)

Wow, this is crazy that GOLDFISH need all this! :S I'm not going to be much help, since I don't own goldfish. But when I was in 8th grade, I did a "science project" (quotes because I was like 10 or so and didn't even know how to do a science project) on which fish flake food brand was better for the color, health etc. of goldfish. The bowls I had the little fish in where so small that I couldn't fit my fist past the rim. The fish died of course... so don't put them in decorative bowls made for the living room table whatever you do! :/

Yes, I was shocked when I found this out too. The gulf between best practice and what the popular culture has fallen in to is huge. I ate at a restaurant Wednesday which had quite a large goldfish tank. Despite the tank being large (70G?), the size of the goldfish (some of them may even have been Koi) was even more shocking. Easily more than a dozen, some bigger than a foot long.. something like that. The tank was basically a box of water with almost no decoration. I decided to just have some mild, friendly conversation with the owner about it and if I manage to go back there enough maybe someday I'll have gained his confidence enough to offer some suggestions that might result in a healthier situation for the goldfish.

The thing to remember about goldfish is that you never see anything but newborn fish in a pet shop. A mature common gold fish is well over a foot, 30 cm, long. It would have a hard time even turning around in anything much smaller than about a 20 to 30 gallon tank. A fancy goldfish will often have a more ball shaped body that only gets half as long as a comet but is still a very large fish to put into a small tank.
