Yeah, I first got these expecting them to do poorly, but woah, they took off. They seem to appreciate some fertilisers, but other than that, i did nothing special to them. As dizzied said, dont bury the "banannas" in the gravel, just the roots. That said, my banannas all dissapeared eventually, not sure why, I was just left with the roots in the gravel and the lillies coming out of the main stem. One thing to consider though, if they do well, they do send up lilly pads to the surface. At one point mine was growing 2-4 new pads a week, and the largest pad was as big as my hand. So it will require some pruning if you want much light to end up penetrating past the surface!
