Can anyone recommend a good preventative measure to stop the very young fry under a month old from being swept into the cylinder's end that is black plastic with gaps. i used the toes' tip of a ladies fine stocking and elastic band over it this week but found one fish was attached by its mouth parts to the stocking mesh, I hope he will be ok ive seperated them now ( removed the stocking over the filter ) thanks

Don't use power filters with baby fish. Use an air operated sponge filter instead.

If you have to use a power filter, put a round/ cylindrical sponge over the intake strainer. You can get cylindrical sponges with a hole through the centre, for some brands of internal power filter. You can put some pantyhose/ stocking over the outside of the sponge to help a bit more. But most power filters are too strong for baby fish.

I don't have that problem for I'm using air filter systems. No fry will be sucked into a filter.
