finally cheech and chong have settled in and are now behaving like oscars should. today for the 1st time when i went up to the tank to give them their breakfast , they rushed up to the front of the tank , begging and wagging , and nailed the pellets as soon as they hit the water . was begining to think they would never come out of their shells . well pleased . :good:

nice one mate im still waiting for gizmo to come round he swims to the front of the tank but not all excitedly as i should imagine he should...
i begining to think he is a gentle giant

And soon enough you will be wishing they were shy again.

Now get ready to move your fingers quickly as they jump for the food, or you could end up losing them

 il just frop it in from a safe height !! rang round the shops in this area to see what was available in the way ofsuitable catfish ........ not much really. only thing that would be workable is a 2 foot common plec . im undecided yet , still weighing up the pros and cons . the pros i can see are that its big and armoured therefore should be oscar proof , i wanted an algae eater that would withstand oscars , as with ,my tank being plantyless and just decorated with bogwood , unless i have the tank in total darkness im always gonna be fighting algae. not a problem at the moment i just take the wood out every now and then and scrub it then put it back. but if ive got 2 full grown oscars going mental when i do that its gonna be a bit of a mare . so it would be good for that . plus ive always fancied a big plec . only thing maybe putting me off is the amount they poo. but im the sort of person who will clean a tamk every day if it needed doing so shouldnt let that put me off.

i want to get something in there before they get big and decide this is our tank and you aint welcome , so maybe this could be the way to go .

I thought you were going to say "At last, I'm sober again!"

Cheers,
Alessa!

Big plecs are nice, but for algae at that size they are useless, but do a lovely job of keeping the wood clean.

NOOOOOOOO on the plec, seriously all 3 of my Oscars, hate common plecs, dont know why but they just like to attack them randomly. Plus yes the poo, I know I have two O's and a common in my tank and its a nightmare and I have gravel!!!!

You were worried about a bichir on another thread, and I agree with Davo's comments my senegals grew very quickly and are now around 9", so long as you make sure you get on around the 3" mark you will be fine, plus Oscars dont seem bothered by them or the other way around, they are active and make great tankmates IME.

the mess was what was putting me off as i have sand minx . i really want something to keep the wood clean tho . bn plecs are greta for that but i rekon they would be too small for adult oscars. may get a senegal bichir .

not overly dirty minx but as there are no plants to out compete algae i get a bit of black brush algae on it after a while , at themoment i just take it out every now and then and give it a scrub . but can imagine that being errrrm interesting shall we say with 2 big oscars .

They will run and hide when you go to do anything, least mine always do, its a case of 'here she goes again' and they move out the way, then come out 5 minutes after Ive finished to see what changes Ive made. Anyone, once they get bigger, they will move the decor around to how they want it!! Have you tried increasing the flow around the area where you get the BBA? It helps, or get a powerhead in there maybe. I have no real plants (havent for years as you know due to the sev's) and dont have algae issues, ok so I only have the lights on maximum of 6 hours a day, but I found once plants were removed algae issues disappeared anyway.

ican increase the flow around the wood easily enough yes . also i have dropped down from 2 tubes to 1 which is on for around 8 hours .

ditto Minxy on them hiding once you start moving stuff around, Tigger plays dead by the filter, Rusty hides under Vinny only Chops follows me round the tank nosing at what I am doing. Also with plecs, Tiggs hates Gibbs my gibby and she has had some scales taken off when he has brushed past her when she has annoyed him. Rusty only has a bristle and tends not to bother, but he spends most of his time asleep under a rock anyway. Chops is horried to the smaller common & gibby, the common especially, he does chase him, but his worst thing is grabbing a mouthfull of gravel swimming to the surface and spitting it down all over the poor plec.

Silly suggestion that may or may not work re brush algae, would be a RTBS, mine will graze on it from time to time and they are a pretty tough fish I have one living with Harry, texas and JD

my old rtbs used to keep wood spotless , may see if i can find a big one. for now ihave changed tho flow in the tank . u sed to have both my spray bars set at the surface as i needed plenty of surface aggitation at the high discus temps .so i have modified the pipework again , move 1 spraybar down lower and aimed it downwards toward the wood . will se how that helps .
