Hi Guys

Basically, im not happy with the internal filter in my Juwel Rio 180. I bought the tank second hand off ebay about 2 1/2 months ago and its been great, although in the last couple of weeks i have seen more and more dust/particles in my water (really irritates me) i have taken all the sponges out and gave them a wash (didnt over-do it, even if i wanted too lol) but still no luck.. my question is

Should i first replace the sponges and give that a go, or should i get a new filter... im looking at the eheim 2213 which i can get for around £50. the second question is... How does it work when you get a new filter, how long should i leave the internal one in for?

Cheers

Hi, well this is 50-50 argument in as much as that equal amount of people like/dislike the Juwel filter system.

I personally only disliked the way it sucks in a lot of surface food meaning switching off at feeding time or using a feeding ring. If the filter cannot remove the particles then you may find that changing the filter will not help. However you could try a healthy thickness of polishing floss on the top of the 'stack'. Better though to first trying to find the origin of the particles. Over feeding, unclean substrate due to lack of vaccing and not rinsing hands before plunging then in the tank are all causes.

Of course you cannot beat an external filter so if funds allow then gently prising off the filter box and getting the best one you can afford will not only provide optimum filtration but more room in the tank :good:

*TIP* if you do purchase an external simply exchange the amount of new media for the media from the old filter leaving the remainder of the new to fill the filter then you will be able to just continue with the fish you already have but do check you stats. regularly to be sure.

Hi,

Agree with doresy, try find the cause of the particles first.

The juwel internal filters are actually pretty good filters although a little ugly blocking up the corner of the tank, if you want to go external then you'd need to be looking a little bigger than the 2213, a 2215 would suffice but ideally I'd put a 2217 on a 180L tank, I've got a 2217 on my 125L and they can be bought new for about 90 squid.
