Are bio wheel filters like carbon filters?

Nope. You don't need carbon in planted tank, or in any tank for that matter. You only use carbon if you are using medications and need to take it out. A Bio-wheel filter is a filter that has very good biological filtration.

The filter pads for biowheels have some carbon between the layers of filter material. Check the marineland site.
