Hello,
I bought some aquarium salt today and I am wondering how it helps in an aquarium. A general question but I am trying to cycle a 36 gallon at the moment. Any answers are appreciated.

Some fish benefit from the salts in the water. Some fish are brackish water fish, common fish are mollies, and they do much better with salt in the tank.  Also if you are buying new fish and they have ripped fins ( make sure you quarentine fish) it can help fish heal.

I add a few teaspoons for every ten gallons of water. I use it for every water change as well. I also use it to avoid and to treat "ick".

fin rot is from a bacterial infection. Salt isn't going to do much for that.

is it ok to add some salt for cory fish---I thought I read it wasn't good for them to have any salt in the tank

you should NOT add aquarium salt to a tank with Cory Cats

Corys don't like salt. Using salt all the time as a preventative measure doesn't really work, it's like taking antibiotics continually you buildup a resistance to it hence the super bugs we have in people now.
Salt should only be used short term & not with corys
