The Aquarium Chronicles: New Tank Mate

Ghent, a rather rough and edgy red-tail shark, made his usual patrol along the bottom of his home, a 150 gallon aquarium. His home, or at least the part he “owned,” consisted of a heavily planted area with plenty of rocky alcoves and caves to hide in. In short, he was living the good life. On his patrol, he noticed a feeding cory doras catfish, spoken’s name being Albert. This was not unusal, as Albert, being known to most fish, was incredibly stupid and devoid of any usefulness. Therefore, Ghent took particular pleasure in kicking him on his way. With a sudden burst of speed, made possible by his advanced fins and swim bladder, Ghent rammed into Albert, knocking him, with a rush of bubbles, into a bundle of water ferns. Then, his buddy, a pictus catfish joined him. This catfish,Carl, deemed it appropriate to give a small chuckle at Albert’s misfortune, but also reprimended Ghent softly for being such a bully. “Now, you know the Giver will kick you out of here if ya’ keep that up, pal.” Ghent ignored his friend as usual, because nothing ever went wrong in his tank, and as far as he was concerned, nothing ever would. As a rain of shrimp pellets fell through the water, Ghent was sure of this.

Early the next morning, when the lights were turned on, and the Giver gave the food, something strange appeared near the surface of the water. Shimmering and bobbing along, it was unlike anything Ghent had ever seen before. He snorted as the poor-minded tetras huddled against each other in a corner and saw a school of cory doras hiding under a rock next to their supposed guardian, Old Pete (a very large plecostomus). Having nowhere to hide, and not being the kind of fish to hide, Ghent cautiously, for he was not a dumb fish, made his way to the surface. To his surprise, a sort of barrier stopped him What in the…

Ghent jumped when Carl popped up beside him. “Hey, pal, so…what’d ya’ thing?”

Ghent looked confused, especially since Carl seemed to know what this strange think was. “What’re you talking about, Carl? What is this?”

Carl seemed to look it over one more time, even though Ghent was sure he already knew what it was. “It’s a fish bag. I’ve seen ‘em before. This is where the Giver lets out new fish. We all had one, but for some reason, we can never remember it.”

Ghent thoroughly checked the bag’s content, seeing nothing but water. “Where is he?”

Carl swam with Ghent over to a hole in the bag. “It seems that he’s escaped. He’s somewhere in this tank…probably in another section.”

Ghent nodded his head and looked around, even while knowing he wouldn’t find anything. I wonder where he is?
