Aqualight Help

I've had my aqualight 65 watt light over my 20 gallon for a while now, but it never has sit quite right, the edges of the unit don't quite fit over each side of my tank on the left and right, so i just rest it on the edges of the tank. My question is, if I get the mounting legs for it, will I be able to take off the glass lid I have? Also, I kinda want to keep the lid on it, but 1) I'm not sure it will still fit with the mounting legs, and 2) If I got a different kind (they have ones that will connect to the back of the tank) I'm affraid I may not be able to position the light so that it goes through the large glass area of the lid, it may have some of the light just hitting the seam where the thing is hinged to open for feeding. Anybody have any ideas?
