Aquaclear 200 filter

I was wondering what most people use in their Aquaclear filters. Right now I'm using a carbon insert and a sponge. I've read that some people don't use the carbon and use 2 sponges instead. Doe's the carbon really do anything? Do the ammonia inserts really help? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

I believe carbon keeps the smells down and keeps the water clear, I am not sure on the ammonia inserts (trying as we speak).

I have an AC Mini & AC150 in my 25 gal and an AC300 in my 37 gal. In all three I use two foam inserts and an ammonia remover insert.

When I first got into fishkeeping, my lfs guy got me onto the two foam and no carbon. He said that with a good healthy bacterial community in the two foams would do the same job as carbon.

It's been working for me.

I think I might try 2 sponges and the ammonia insert. 2 sponges should give more space for the good bacteria to attach to.. I think. Thanks for your your help everybody.
