I`ve just set up my first planted tank and i know for a fact that i`m going to want to tinker with it and remove and add new plants over and over again, Does every one go through this or is it just me
I see moodys nano and goerges nano all set up and they`ve had them like that for weeks, i added my substrate on saturday and already i`ve tinkered

Yeh tinkering is only natural, especially in new setups. Although it is worth letting it settle for a good month before you do anything to major as it takes time for a scape to develop and you wont know what it really looks like until its matured.

It can be a case of taking time to plan proporly so that when you set the design up there will be little fiddeling needed ,Or you could start with an idea then tinker like mad until you are really happy, either way its a personel choice, i plan like made for as long as it takes until im happy with a design on paper and in my head then go from there.

i`m pretty sure i like the design i`m going for, but i`ve planted up with weeds and all the deep rooting things such as crypts and swords first and i`m slowly going to introduce my carpeting plants and such like.

I'm always thinking of changing the Aquascape in mine, even though I've now got residents in there! The hollow 'tree stump' in my tank is too perfect a hiding place, and most of my Loaches never venture outside it during daylight hours! On the planting side, I tend to view it like an underwater garden, so taking cuttings from plants and general maintenance, etc. is pretty much the same. I'm slowly taking cuttings from my Elodeas to re-plant at the back, to give a bit more body to the backdrop, but my main concern is trying to stop my Dwarf Gouramis from tearing shreds off my Water Wisteria! It'd look stunning if it was left alone!

I guess I suffer from what I call 'PFK envy'. I see all those stunning pics in PFK, with lush greenery and crystal clear water against a black background, and I feel like giving up! I'm sure it's all photoshopped...

Thats fine, let your aquascape evolve and take its on path. You will find that plants may need to move to give more space or because they are shadowed by taller plants. OR, you could just get the plants in the tank and leave them to it, just a Little maintenance to keep them healthy but other than that they do their own thing.

Two real key points of aquascaping are....

1: The hards scape, this will give you design a sense of depth, mood, shape realism or wilderness to which you will position your plants around.

2: Is the plant choice. Choose plants that compliment each other in shape and color. Choosing lots of plants that have similar color and leaf shape will look dull and samey. Also think about how the plants will be at the biggest and best ( Most people forget about this ) so that you can choose its neighbors appropriately.

For example, Hemianthus micranthemoides and Micranthemum umbrosum go well together as far as leaf shape go, where as Micranthemum umbrosum and Aponogeton ulvaceus would be hard to look balanced.

WHEN CHOOSING YOUR PLANTS DO YOUR RESEARCH, LOOK AT ITS FULLY GROWN HIGHT AND WIDTH TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE IN YOUR TANK FOR IT TO GROW PROPERLY AND TO COMPARE HOW IT WILL GROW ALONG SIDE ITS NEIGHBORS
