hi,
I got 2 golden apple snails in my fry tank the fish dont bother them and vice versa and they are pretty good organic hoovers to reach the parts of the tank my cleaner cant LOL any way i know they are A-sexual and im kinda wondering if what i have is a pile of snail eggs above the water in the tank? thought maybe one of them had draged up some sand at first but on closer inspection it dont quite resemble it, if they are A.S eggs then how long do they take to hatch.....can the general bogstandard fish keeper raise apple snails? or is this a specialist j0bbie with special chem, feeding and more experience than i am ever likely to obtain :S
i hate snails expecialy the mts ARGHHHHHHHHHHH but these are kinda cute  wouldnt mind a bunch more with different coloured shells :hyper: but our lfs only has the golden ones do you think the possible babies may have different shell colours? How do you look after apple snails any way i chucked in a slice of cuecumber they soon made short work of it i hope that wasnt a bad idea?!

If the eggs are underwater, they're not apple snail or mystery snail eggs. If they're above the waterline, they probably are.

"True" apple snail (cana) eggs look like this:

"mystery snail" eggs (brigs, which are actually a type of 'apple snail') look like this:

The apple snail family actually are not "asexual", intersexed, or hemaphroditic, unlike most pest snails. They have distinct male and female genders, one per snail, although it's hard to sex them to the unexperienced eye.

They're pretty easy to hatch and raise, actually. They usually take about 2 weeks to hatch. The eggs need to stay ABOVE the water, if they are submerged the embryos will drown. Make sure they stay in a humid enviornment (leaving them in place in the tank works well). The newly hatched snail need a lot of food, adn they won't crawl very far for it at first. Cucumber and zucchini are great, sinking algae wafers work well, as do "weekend feeder" blocks. Snails do need calcium added to the tank at least a couple times a week to grow strong, healthy shells.

If both parents are golden, you're likely to only get goldens, although depending on what they're carrying you might get the occasional chestnut/brown or ivory. You won't get any of the more unusual colors (blues, purples, pinks) as those are recessive to the browns, blacks, and golds. If both parents have light feet like most goldens do, the offspring will also all have light feet.

i wouldnt hatch them unless you want around 100-200 little snails.
or you have the heart to kill most of them as apple snails get to the size of a golf ball or bigger.

thats an interesting link you sent thanks,I had no idea they where not asexual i dont think im clever enough to find out if i have either sex though i think i have to wait to see if i get eggs first , i guess from your picture of the as eggs i havent got any as these are black not orangy and only a few not a big pile i might just have mistaken sand draged up there :look: Fishdawg your right i dont want millions of the cuties but because they lay eggs above the water line i can remove them as nesissary i guess and maybe put them in my big tank as food for the loaches :shifty:
