I have an 80L tank completely empty. During the Christmas holiday I want something to do. Combine the two and I can set up a new tank! Wooooo! I want to replicate the Apisto's natural habitat using oak/beech leaves, beech twigs and sand. I would like an Apisto species that is easy to breed, readily available and has an easily replicated natural habitat. Can species be suggested as well as their conditions and if possible a picture (of their natural habitat would be a bonus!). Also how many can I have in the tank size as well as any fish they can live with peacefully that won't eat any eggs, obviously from the same habitat.

Thank you,

Hi that site is up now :) Seriously fish it will seriously help you with this plan I have found and put together this one - all the fish are from the orinoco and are quite easy to find - you might need to use aquarist classifieds to find the Hongsloi but should be findable - the cories might be difficult but if you have a look around you might find them :) Make sure you research for specific names for regions and the amazon.

Orinoco River

3 Apistogramma Hongsloi (1m 2f)
6 Green Neon Tetras
6 Nannostomus unifasciatus - One-lined Pencilfish
6 Corydoras brevirostris - Spotted Cory

Wills :)

Nice sounds great, I think I've seen the Green Neons and Pencils at my local MA so I should be able to get them easy. One of my other LFS specialises in SA dwarf cichlids so I will have a look there and maybe ask whether they can stock Hongsloi. I had 4 Cories in the tank before and felt they didn't have enough space so I'd go for Pygmy Cories as I think it would be fairer on the fish. 3/4 of the Cories are - as of today infact - in one of my 4fters and seem to be enjoying the space. Anyway thanks for putting this together for me I've been on the site but can't find the section where they say certain rivers. But I've been looking at random fish anyway.

Thanks again,

Rare aquatics in Cheshire currently have hongsloi in stock and offer a postage service. But also if you check on tropicalfishfinder.co.uk there are a few other places listed with them in stock, including wildwoods.

Obviously there are plenty of small independant fish shops that probably have them in stock at the moment but other than phoning around all your local shops, tropicalfishfinder is a good place to start. :)

tbh, if you are looking to spwan, you maybe better off getting your apistos from a breeder, rather than have them imported in by a shop. I only say this, as the quality of apistos in shops I have seen, have been dreadful but that is just around here.

You may also want to look at using RO water, unless you have softwater in your area. Apistos do better with spawning in softer waters.

Good luck!

On seriously fish if you just use the search bar thats how it works for searching rivers - like Xingu, Negro, Tocantins etc.
