Ok, as some of you may know i have recently bought some new Angels. On the sales card at the LFS it had some genetic codes... Well, that's me done for, so... Anyone fancy explaining to me what the hell they mean?

HELP by David Raynham, on Flickr

Thankyou please. :D

I believe that it means heterozygous stripeless (with wild type) and homozygous Platinum Blue, but I'm not an angelfish breeder anymore, so I may be wrong.

It would create a relatively stripeless fish, with a shiny blue tint, or, as they say, a blue ghost.

"S/+, pb/pb" literally means "blue ghost" ;) The full version should be "+/+,S/+,+/+,+/+,+/+,+/+,+/+,+/+,pb/pb"

S means blushing (stipeless, aka ghost) from father and + means wild-type (in this case stripes) from mother. pb/pb means "blue" from both parents, which is recessive, so quite a lot of inbreeding is involved in getting the colour.

Assuming usual genetics apply, the F1 from your fish should be 25% S/S, 50% S/+ and 25% +/+, and all blue.

kitty has it spot on minnnt the parents are ghost and striped. i was talking to the guys at the shop today and this is what they confirmed :good:

Thanks Rob and Kat, much appreciated! :good:

Any other info Matt?

Where does the Ken Kennedy and Singapore Blue come into it?

I actually think that i understand Kat's explanation!

ken kennedy if i recall is a top angel breeder so im guessing these are bred from some of his fish somewhere along the lines.

LOL! Yours was actually more or less the same outcome as KK's, but Kat explained what all the letters and +/- means... Kat knows i need a little bit more of an explanation into EVERYTHING as i am a bit thick. Whereas you're a doctor so would probably understand it anyway and wouldn't need to ask on a forum

Anyway, here are a couple of pics, and yes, the description is pretty much bang on. :good:

Your faith in my profession is heartwarming, if, in this case, somewhat inaccurate. Genetics isn't usually a strong point. I used to breed angels years ago and kept up with some of what was going on whilst away from the hobby.

Were they from Wharf Aquatics mate? Wish I had my larger tank still, I'd love a pair of these.
