New to the forums,

And just wondering if there are many people from North East England. I live in Yarm a little town near Middlesbrough.

Just wondering if there are many others from the good old north... Would be good to talk to some of you about what you keep and what have you :good:

I live in Yarm too :)

Haha really? I work at the Shell Garage, While im waiting to join the police, Been a year and a half. Got a bad feeling with all the cuts that have come in that im not going to be gettig in for a couple of years so may have to go into the prison service in the mean time. So we will see. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

In that case, we might even have met :) My husband fills up regularly at that garage, and gets me to go in and pay. I'll keep a look out for you in future.

Haha. wonder if you can spot me out. Cant imagine it being too hard there as there are not many younger blokes working there.

Ahright ok. Whats it like for LFS up there? Where i am i have used a little one near me for a good while for most of my things, apart from Equipment. Will be ordering a good amount of fish from them soon for my new project. but im starting to venture online now. Ohhhh dare i :p

My favourite shop is Paddock Farm, though I haven't been there since I got my betta. It's a bit far for the odd tub of fish food. They were just finishing a major refit when I was last there, and things were looking better than ever. They'll also order bits of 'hardware' if you ask.
I also use Maidenhead Aq in Strikes at Stokesley, Chilton Aq at Chilton, and when we've been for a day out in York, I always call in at Aquatic Finatic on the 168 just south of Northallerton. Teesside Koi (oppsite the post office sorting office in Stockton) also has tropicals, though they've never had what I wanted. The same for Petmania in both Billingham and Portack Lane.

I don't like that garden centre in Eaglescliffe - I've had too many problems with fish from there. If you do buy, make sure you quarantine.

Yeah i use MA at Stokesley aswell. I didnt mean the garden centre (Peter Barrets) i meant Sunningdale pets. Its just a little pet shop but they have a good marine and tropical stock and Simon the owner knows what hes talking about with it :good: always a good thing :p

I would never EVER buy fish from Peter Barrets. They treat there fish horrendous and there untreated overstocked like mad, and all un healthy, i have never had a healthy fish from them, and have many conflicts with the staff there about how they treat there fish.

But appart from Sunningdale Pets & MA at Strikes, I havent used anywhere else really. just the odd bits here and there. Ill deffinatly check out Paddock Farm :)

Iss Teesside Koi good?

:)

I'd completely forgotten about Sunningdale  I went there once many years ago, and they only had a few fish, none of which I was interested in. I've never been back.

Teesside Koi do stock a lot of fish, and some are different from anywhere else. I've not bought from them though.

As I only buy fish nowadays when I want something in particular, I've taken to ringing shops to ask if they have what I want before I go, but it doesn't stop me looking at the fish when I go for something else. It drives my husband mad - " You're only getting dechlorinator, why are you wasting time looking at fish when you don't want any?"

WE have quite a good few up here. There are 2 family run local ones which are really good - Betta Aquaria in Byker and Tyne Valley Aquatics in Mickly (near Prudhoe). Then we have a few pets at homes (one is certainly better than the other), we have Peter Barrats (but I would NOT recomment buying from them) and Dobbies Garden Centre at the airport which is quite nice too. There is apparently a nice one in Gosforth but we've not been to it yet.

Paddock Farm is quite good too - it's WAY too far for me to go regularly. I went in and was disappointed at the tiny shop; and then I walked around the corner and saw the huge shop lol!

There is a shop called Fish Alive in Durham too; someone we know swears by the shop but for some reason I wouldn't feel happy buying from there and neither would my boyfriend; I don't know why though.

How could you forget about sunningdale tut tut essjay  i like them there, THey dont have Tonnes of stock, but they have a good selection for cold water marine & tropical keepers. and tthe owner simon is a good guy many an hour spent chatting to him in there.

I love it when you go to the shop for say a "Glass Cleaner" and walk out with new fish and about 5 other bits hehe :) Everytime i go to a shop i always end up buying something :p its a nightmare :p

I have never been to Teesside Koi so i might have to check that out next week :) Thanks for the heads up :)

So what do you keep then? :) Let me into the world of your tanks :p

HAHA Dipsy ill bair that in mind when i check out Paddock Farm :p i dont want to be like URG #129###! This is rubbish, then bam! :) Big shop.

Im looking forward to checking it out now :) i do love MA over in Stokesley. My girlfriend lives over there aswell so its handy when im over at her house. i can be like fancie a walk? hahaha :)

My fish are in my profile :) It's easier to send you there than type it all out.

Paddock Farm is a funny shop. You have to go through the garden centre to the building, and there's a little passage to the fish section; though the tanks of pond fish and you're in the tropical section. Turn left for the fish room. They were still extending it last autumn, haven't been since. The thing that did impress me was the whole rank of 3 or 4 gall tanks, all with sponge filters, for the male bettas. Which is how this all started back in the betta forum

Coincidentally, I've just had a phone call form Mark at PF. I rang a couple of months ago to ask about some apistos, and he's just got back to me. He said they'd had them in for a couple of weeks and now they've settled, they're for sale. Very helpful shop. [Though I got some apistos from Chilton Aq a couple of weeks ago]

Ohhh just had a look :) how are your rams with the rest of your fish? and how big are they... was thinking about keeping some in my 60ltr. but dont know much about them so depends if its big enough and wether or not they will get too agressive.

Sounds like a maze at Paddock Farm  i may have to pay a visit next week and go check it all out :)

If i did get rams they would be in with a male beta so just depends on the research i do first. I dont want to have anything thats going to cause too much trouble even if they are stunning :p

Whats the chances of that ey. You must be due a visit too them then

I wouldn't put bolivian rams in a 60 litre. My 125 litre is pushing it.

If you definitely want a betta in the 60 litre, you need to stock around the betta. They are very variable in what you can keep with them. There's a thread in the FAQ section, in the betta subsection.

Or get the betta his own tank, and put something else in the 60l. PF have some Apistogramma trifasciata in stock

This thread is now getting too fishy for General Chat  We need to go back to the betta forum for discussions on tankmates. :)

hahaha you love moving forums

I did have my heart set on getting the beta in there with a community setup. planted as-well probably :)

But i do like the idea of geting a Biorb or something smaller like a 25ltr tank to keep one in :) could always go that way.

I have all these ideas for the new project, and my mind goes mental :p
