Hi all,

I really like the look of wood in tanks but I don't like the price :p

Can I use any wood in a tank? They've just cut down a pine tree near my place and I could grab some interesting looking pieces of wood there. Could I use that if I baked it or boiled it?

No evergreen wood is suitable for fish tanks.

Sorry. Pine would be dangerous as the resins it contains are toxic to fish..

Hawthorn, Apple, Cherry, Alder, Rowan, Oak, and Heather are good for tanks. Just make sure that the pieces you take aren't green and have been dead for some time.

Pines and wood from coniferous trees are toxic most animals. Fish included.

The best driftwoods are always for free! Try checking your local woods for some nice, deadwood.

Once you're home, just boil the wood in water for 30 minutes or so, so anything harmful that may still be living in the wood will be killed and so be safe for underwater use.

There are some apple trees in the area so I am on the look out for a good piece :)
