i have a large 50 gal tank currently housing tropicals. I am bring the tropicals back to the store and planning to go back to goldfish. I have a big black moor in another tank and plan to rehouse him in the 50 gal.

my question is can i house small fancy golfish in the 50 with a black moor thats about 5-6 inches? I want to make sure that the moor wont eat the smaller fish, although there is a beta in with him not and they are like best friends!!I know all the rules about inches of fish per gal and i am also aware that gold fish are dirty and need more room per inch than tropicals.

I plan to get 6-7 new fancys and and raise them till they get big enough to be in a year round pond. Where i live it costs a fortune to buy larger fish for a pond so i plan to raise fish until they are big enough to go in a pond and give them to friends and family who have ponds but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars stocking them. It may take a few years to help everybody out but i get to enjoy raising the fish till then. I will keep getting little ones as the others are big enough.

i also posted this question in the cold water section but i thought it couldn't hurt to post here as well!

te betta is a tropical fish. you cannot keep it with a cold water fish!

whereabouts in the world are you? colder climates (europe, northern states of america etc) are too cold for fancy goldfish to live outside, common goldfish are ok outside. if your talking about an indoor pond, ignore all that!

and people are right, a betta really needs tropical temperatures to thrive. get him a little 4 or 5 gallon tank for himself with a heater and he'll be happy.

Assuming that you are going to move the betta so he is not with the goldfish anymore:
a) I see no issue with housing small fancy goldfish in a 50 gall coldwater tank until big enough for your pond. They should be perfectly compatible with your larger black moor - I used to have goldfish in a variety of sizes in the same tank and never had a problem with it.
B) Am cheerily assuming that your pond will not be perishing cold in the winter, as fancy goldies aren't as hardy as normal ones. Apols if you already know this!
