I'm not sure it's always about the original post though. I always figure that for every OP there will be a lot of people interested in the same question who may buzz by over the months or even years after. If someone has something new to offer to the discussion, even if the OP is long gone, well, the ideas live on.
It's when we get the inane stuff on an old thread that's annoying, or if it's an old thread phrased as an emergency and someone tries to help that guppy ten years later.
It might help if the date of posting were easier to see.
