Can you get anaerobic conditions running in a freshwater tank similar to how a deep sand bed works within marine tanks?

I'm aware of the toxic chemicals that this process can give off but if you contain the reactions with in a sump can this be done.

Second thing is can this be done of temperate water tanks. This is where i have allot of uncertainty as to how effective no3 removal could be. Will the temperature of the water slow the bioloical process so much that it will be totally in effective?

Im just dismatling my sumped 100G marine tank to move it to my 33gal tank due to costs. So the gold fish are getting an upgrade from there small home. So i'm mulling about what i could do/try using a sump on a freshwater system besides just filling it with ceramic rings and floss.

Sumps don't appear in freshwater set ups much so i cant find alot of information regarding media options.

It can be done in FW, but the time, hassle and costs are normally far more than just doing water changes. More often in Fw you will see an automatic water change system employed.

All my fw sumps run with a trickle tower for highly efficient breaking down of ammonia and nitrites.
