According to BBC news, its caused by excess Nitrates. I wonder how true that is?

thats some algae problem! I bet that lot gets sold off to BP to work on their bio fuel programme

as for nitrates 'causing algae', we know this not to be true...Light and ammonia do. However, i'm sure excess nitrates haven't helped the matter, as the algae use these to feed on. They don't actually say that the nitrate is causing the algae though.

It is in S/W though, so, i wonder what kind of algae it is?? llj?

I suspect we may need more Oto's

James.

of course the problem here is not high nitrates. It's too much light allied with poor CO2 levels and not enough plantmass in there. :p

I can't access the video well on my home internet. I'll have a look at work.

Lots of money and work going into removing this stuff.

So apparently it's only harmful when it's decaying. Once rotting, if disturbed, harmful gases are released.
So lets keep it alive :hyper: :grr: .........

Is nitrate the cause? Probably not, no. It wont be helping once the algal species has bloomed though.
The manure, well, that's a different story. Lots of ammonia there!

If they really want to know the cause, then just look up at the sun.

Without knowing the system, there's not much we can say.
