first off i will start with the ammonia problem. ok here is the story...
as some or most of you may know i had a long battle with ammonia and the stress and stress related illnesses that the fish endure with high ammonia levels. well i wanted to change my tank from gravel to sand for that more natural look. well after i cleaned the tank and i changed the top layer of the filter cotton because it was covered with sludge i naturally put my fish back in with clean treated water. well my ammonia spiked back up and i am dealing with the same problem. i don't know what to do or was it the fact that i changed the filter cotton or cleaned the tank that killed the beneficial bacteria?

also, i have algae eaters and i fear that they are not getting a proper diet. i have a pleco and an oto (i don't care much for my CAE because he is leaving soon and i am giving him algae wafers until then). well i can't get a good algae growth growing in my tank. i see other people have a green film on the walls of their tanks and all i see is clear acrylic. i tried algae wafers but they don't eat them. the wafers just dissolve and leave a mess in my substrate. is there a way to simulate a faster growth of algae?

leave your tank light on for longer. nearer a window maybe (i wouldnt advise this though as a hot sunny day will heat the tank.) remove nitrate eating plants etc etc. to be honest you want see anything with a cae in there they are very good when it comes to algea but you cant expect them to survive on just the algea your tank will produce. they will need cucumbers and wafers. min also really like the sinking catfish pellets.

well i am rehoming him soon to a friend. i keep him isolated no because he got to aggressive towards my swordtails. i put him in a breeding trap with algae wafers but he doesn't seem to touch them. my oter tank went about 2 weeks without any type of algae eater and then i got an oto cat. as soon as he went in he was scraping algae (or appeared to be) off of the side of the glass. i am aware of the fact that i need at least 2-3 otos to be together, but right now until i move around some fish and make sure my ammonia levels go back down from adding him. then i will add another one. i know that they are sensitive and don't want to kill them. that wood be really bad

if you did want to keep your cae try him in the 55 gal. they are territorial and im sure this was the problem you've had. give him a little room and he can claim an area and he will thrive. these guys should be kept in a 3ft tank minimum really
