Has anyone had any experience with the product, would like to know before I try it myself.

Thanks :)

Good product, changes ammonia to ammonium, which is way less harmful to fish, yet still able to be used by your bio filtration.

Hi. I've heard that it works well. One thing to remember though is that you will still get a positive test for ammonia while using the product.

my feelings are that its something you dont need to use. its the type of product sold to people that dont understand a tanks chemistry. it makes your lfs a small fortune...

In some cases probably. But , I have ammonia in my tap water. Sometimes it spikes as high as 1.5PPM. When this happens combined with the waste from my fishes can overwhelm the bacteria in my tank. It also plays havoc when trying to do a fishless cycle.

In my case it's useful.

 This product is not the product that I would use only because changing the water delutes the ammonia anyway. They have products that you put in your filter media that works well. So I would agree with FBF

actually this means that you can cycle a tank just by adding water. your filter should be able to cope with the extra ammonia. or even add a second filter if your tank is highly stocked. its only when you have nitrates in your water that things can become a real problem, i think you'll find that regular use of ammo lock will do more damage than good.

The reason why people who have ammonia in their tap water need products like amo-lock is nto because their fitlers can't handle the ammonia, it is because exposure to ammonia for any period of time is stressful to fish. the bacteria that use the ammonia as food don't immediately neutralize ammonia. It takes a little while for that to happen.

One of the other benefits of these products is they make the ammonia safe for fish, but filters can still use the ammonia. These products by no means reduce the ammonia concentration avaliable to fish.

Do I recomend these products to people who are newbies and are cycling their tanks? No. I believe that it is better for them to be doing daily water changes to keep low levels of ammonia and nitrite. Do these products have a use - yes, for peopel who have ammonia in their water or peopel with bettas, which are often kept in uncycled tanks (bettas have a hard time with the current from filters)

With exceptions like high ammonia concentration in the tap water, these products are a waste of your money because your filter should handle the ammonia without a problem. The only way I can see it being useful is in the case of a large ammonia spike due to a broken filter or some such thing. As far as additives for a healthy aquarium go, you're better off adding nothing more then dechlorinater - keep things simple and less will go wrong.

With a product like ammo-lock you are treating the symptoms, not the problem. It's useful for getting a poorly maintained tank back in order, or dealing with a filter that dies & goes unnoticed. It is not something to be used in a newer setup, or cycling tank. It does do what it is supposed to do, and does it quite well. It is an overused product though, and shouldn't be used a fraction of what is being sold.
