hi all recently bought my self a 4ft tank 39 gallons (uk) i have not yet set it up as its the only piece of equipment i have at the moment saving up at the moment to get some good gear anyway first question what sort of filter would best suit this size tank i would really like to go for an external one second question once it is all set up (god knows when it will be, soon i hope) after its been cycled which i have read about nearly eveywhere in here. second question what sort of fish are best suited together and how many of them could i have, i have books and read about stocking levels but cant seem to work it out right so am cheating and asking for the answer .BTW i get on this forum everyday and have a look whats about and realise if it werent for how can i say the veterans us beginners would never know what to do keep up the good work and keep those answers coming

I would suggest an Eheim Classic 2215 (around £60 fully inclusive) or an Eheim Professional 2224 (around £90 fully inclusive). Or even an Eheim Professional 2 for £100.

We can cheat too, by asking you some questions first ;)

Do you know what your water hardness and pH is ?
Even though most fish will adapt, it's always best to keep fish in water that's closest to what they thrive in :)

Ps: it's always better to over filtrate than under filtrate. There are ways to reduce the output if need be.

no idea on ph i i dont have a tester kit keep meanig to get one also have a 2 ft tank which i liberated from gfs work as it was being neglected which holds 1 goldfish from preious owner and leopard plec which i added to try and sort out the algae problem after new gravel, filter, plants (plastic),air pump coming along nicely but want rid of the goldfish and get something a bit nicer to look at i added some mopani to it and apart from the water having a slight tinge is fine will go out on w/e and get tester kit though

Just pick up a pH test kit (the liquid kind, not the dip stick) and then let us know what it is.

Though I can highly recommend the API Master test kit with the additional gH & kH test which would be very helpful (though not strictly essential).

ok nice one try and get them readings for you asap and cheers for filter advice will start looking on w/e for one after i built my stand
