Hi, I have recently put an air stone into my tank and was just wondering what it helps with, apart from oxygenating the tank.

They don't really add that much oxygen, a well positioned filter or power head would do a much better good.

They are mainly for aesthetics, they do provide a small amount of circulation to the tank as well, they may also interest some fish to stop them getting bored, but I'm not too sure on how long that would last.

When used in conjunction with a sponge filter they will also aid biological filtration in the tank, though you are just using the air stone so it won't apply to you.

I quite like air bubble pumps, although they can never compete with the role of the filter and are not an essential peice of kit for the aquarium, they do have quite a few benefets, they help create water suface movement and a bit of oxygen and a lot of fish seem to enjoy playing in the bubbles, they also look very good too :good: .
