I have a clear seal filter which I bought from the internet when i started just 3 months ago. The other evening we had a power cut which only lasted about 15 minutes but as a consequence, my fliter is making the most unbearable noise.

We have tried and tried and cannot fix it, so have goneout today and bought a new one - an Eheim.

My question is what is the best way for us to go about changing the filter over? I am very worried as it took ages to get the balance right in the tank and my fish are now happy and healthy.

syphon off a bucket of water.
take the media out of the clearseal filter (sponges, I assume)
rinse them in the bucket.
take you new media and soak them in the dirty water.
you have now transfered some bacteria to your new media.

We bought it on EBay and I dont think it came with a guarantee - still I am happy the Eheim one that I bought to replace it - and having come from a shop - it has a 2 year guarantee.

Just to let u know that I followed your advice - but still worried loads overnight - tested the next day and had a minimal amount of nitrite which had disappeared completely within another 12 hours - so all is back to normal. Thank you.
