Hi all,

I have joined this forum to learn about the best way to keep tropical fish. Looks like i have come to the right place. Already from reading the pinned threads i have learnt a lot. There are a couple questions i would like your advice on.
Firstly i am in the processing of looking for a tank. As i am not made of money i thought i would look into a second hand tank. (Ebay mainly). I am after a 4ft tank in a beech surround. How much would you pay for a tank of this nature (I know it all depends on make but lets say a none branded tank, i know the rena type tanks are a lot more money). Also i notice some tanks come with a UV light as they are currently set up as a vivarium. Daft question but is a UV light ok to use with fish?
I am looking to spend around £100-£140 for the tank. Any advice would be appreciated. Once i get the tank then comes choice of fish ;-)

Cheers

Hmm, when you say a beech surround, do you mean the tanks, that also have a stand built onto them? If that's the type that you mean, i think you will struggle to get a 4ft for your money range, even second hand. If it's something else you are meaning, then i don't know. If you were just to get a standard glass tank e.g. clear seal, then for a second hand 4ft tank i'd be willing to pay around around £80-£100, depending on condition.

Anyone ever tried freecycle to get fish tanks http://www.freecycle.org/

Just had a look at my local group and there were a few tanks, some 3ft or 4ft. They don't come up often, but might be worth a look, because the great thing with freecycle is it's free :hyper:

I mean a beech cabinet as well. What do you think of this tank?

Also it comes with a 12W UV light (blue colour apparently) Is this ok to use with Fish?
Also has a 300W heater. Is this ok for a tank of this size (4ft)

Its £150, none branded?

Craigslist is great for second hand tanks, too, but I don't know if craigslist is active in the UK (I think that's where the OP is from.)

What do you think of this tank then?

looks fairly decent, and for £150 isn't a bad price.

The 300w heater should do the job, but some people think it's better to have two heaters in there, incase one breaks, personal prefernce really.

The blue light isn't harmful for fish, it's to help the live plants (if you are going to get any) to grow
