Hello ,
My tank has been up and running for around 4 weeks now and i have had my fish in there a week ... when i first got the tank going i added tap safe and worked it out and stuff ...
But just before i done my first water change ... i took around 20 % out. It says on my tap safe bottle :
To remove chlorine - 5 ml treats 38 l
To remove chloramine - 10 ml treats 38 l
To Protect scales and fins - 10 ml treats 38 l
So my tank is 140 l and i done a 20 % water change and i added 25ml of tap safe ... Is that about right ?
Thanks

1ml = 3.8L so i think its just 7.3ml you need.

If 20% of your 140 tank is 28L then you've added quite a bit extra. I don't "THINK" it matters but you will want to double check that.

From what I've been told this is on the money what PDSimon has just said. However I was always recommended to go for at least 1.5x up to 2x the instructed amount. So I would suggest doing 10ml when you do your 20% change.

Haha, you are, like myself, using Nutrafin water conditioner? This info on the bottle confused me to.

I would suggest using 10ml aswell. 20% of 140 litres is 28 litres. It says 5ml will sort your chlorine out but 10ml will also protect scales and fins so take advantage of it and do that.

During the first year of a tank (the time when the beneficial bacterial colonies in the filter will be immature) it is an added insurance to dose the conditioner (conditioner being the chemical that removes chlorine/chloramines) at 1.5x to 2x what the manufacturer tells you. Its not good to go over 2x dosing because that may slow the growth of the second type of bacteria, the Nitrospira set of species.

If you are conditioning the tap water in a bucket prior to putting it in the tank, you calculate the dose based on the volume of water in the bucket. If you are introducing the tap water directly to the tank, you must calculate the dosage based on the volume of water in the tank. The running tank with fish and organic molecules floating about will interact with the conditioner and lower its effectiveness at neutralizing the chlorine products. That is why it must be dosed at tank volume when doing direct tank filling. In direct tank filling you can pour in the entire conditioner dose just before filling or do half and half before and after the fill.

joza, I can't remember if we've already talked about cycles??
