I have a 5 gallon tank cycled with a female platy, it's been cycling for about 7 weeks but I've heard that it's best to put them in a tank that's been going for 3-4 months. What are the chances that if I got one for my tank that it would have a chance to survive.

Why do you want to add an oto to such a young tank? Have you got much algae growing in there?
Otos prefer alga to eat over any veggy food that you put in, and they much prefer company to being on their own - so get at least two.

I'm not sure what algae they eat, but the front of my tank has plenty of it on it, I think its greenish--I could check later. plus the tank is kind of bear with only one fish in there. The pygmy platy had young the other night and I'm thinking she had a decent lunch the last few days, sorry no pun intended. I want to get some pygmy cory's but no one around here sells them, I think they would be an awesome add to the tank, but I figure a small oto may be neat in their and + help with the algae problem.

If you do decide to add an oto (personally I have found them to be fairly fragile fish) then you should definitly add more than one. Normally I'd recommend 6 but for a five gallon i'd say 3-4. Pick the plumpest ottos too. That is a main sign of an otto's health.
