Good Morning :)

Just a quick question about adding new fish to a tank that all ready as fish in, I been advised to turn lights off for the first couple of hours? what do you do when you introduce new fish.

turn the lights off pop the bag in the water poke a hole in the bag for oxygen leave for 15-20 minutes cut the bag some more and let the fish swim into the tank in their own time leave an hour or so turn the lights back on

Thank's just done it, lights are out and the new Pearl Gourami will be out of the bag in 15mins, thanks for your confirmation :) I thought i had read it somewhere to turn off lights.

I turn the lights off. Float the bag of fish for twenty to thirty minutes. Open the bag and roll down the top of the bag two or three times like rolling down your socks, this will allow the bag to float upright on the surface or you can clip the bag to the side of the tank with clothespin or binder clip. Add approx one half cup of water from your aquarium to the bag every five minutes until the bag is near full. Then pour about half the water from the bag into a small bucket and repeat until the bag is once again near full.
At this time,I would net the fish from the bag and release them into my tank taking care not to add water from fish store tanks to my own. who knows what could be in fish tank water.
I normally leave lights off for the first 24 hours and also foods for new fish. Many fish seldom eat while adapting to new enviornment and uneaten food is wasteful and leads to water quality issues.
For other fishes,, I use drip acclimation.

I do a drip acclimation. The fish that I am adding never know whether or not the tank lights are on. They are in the acclimation bucket, not the tank.
