I bought a male and female apistogramma cacatuoides but unfortuntately lost the male recently. When I bought them they had been kept in less than ideal conditions and I think he was a bit stunted, he never really put on weight even though he fed well, eventually fading away. The female on the other hand has done really well, grown quite a bit and developed a lovely yellow colour, very active, healthy and inquisitive, I really enjoy watching her.

I do worry that she's on her own though, so have been considering getting hold of another male, or preferably another male and female to make a trio.

Would there be any problems adding new apistos to the tank? I don't want her to get bullied by newcomers. The tank is 1m, 180 litres.

If you remove your current female, rearrange the tank a bit them add them all back in at once with some caves at either end for the females then i think you will be fine. :good:

Try and source them from another lfs though in an attempt to obtain different bloodlines.

I'm thinking of ordering a pair from Kesgrave's on ebay. I don't know where the two I got originated from last time, my LFS took them in from someone else, they don't normally stock anything but africans. They were stuck in a cube on the oddball wall and quite miserable, poor things.

I'm planning a re-scape in a month or so, so as long as the female will be alright on her own and doesn't need company in the meantime, I think I'll get some then, it's a good chance/excuse to move the decor around.
