Sorry I know i'm a newbie but we all start somewhere, I would just like to ask what is a skimmer and what does it do? I figure it's some sort of filter thing.

off a site selling reef aquarium products

A protein skimmer is one of the most important components of an aquarium. It removes organic pollutants before they break down (which, in turn, helps to keep a higher water quality for your fish and thus reduces the frequency of water changes required). We recommend you buy the best skimmer within your budget, as it will maintain higher water quality. Our staff has tested almost all the protein skimmers out there and our favorite is the AquaC line of protein skimmers for their efficiency and ease of use. We also recommend the Euro-Reef™ and Precision Marine skimmers highly for their performance and quality.

How much do they cost, and do I need one if I only have a betta and I also have an all-in-one pump wich has a mechanical, chemical and biological filteration system.

if you have a filter for the tank then you don't really need a skimmer. also in case you don't know bettas don't like strong currents.

I'm just trying to cycle my tank, but i'm a bit confused on what I should do. Should I remove my betta and put him in the small cube I got him in and leave him for a while? I can turn down the power of the filter, I just want the tank to be cycled first. How long will it take aswell?
