Hi all. Got a fairly new tank of 4 weeks. Have 5 guppies and 3 neons all fine sofar. I bought a 'flying fox' 2 days ago ( type of barb?). This morning, oh dear, it was dead outside the tank!! There are two spaces in the back of the tank lid for electrics etc. He must have got out there. I'm amazed he got out. Anyone else had this problem? :(

Oh, dear! Sorry to hear about your fish :( When I was trying to transfer my Betta to his cup (temporarily, so I could clean his tank), he jumped out, flopped on the desk, then onto to floor  He was okay, though. That's the closest thing I've had happen. I've heard numerous stories, from people here on TFF, about fish escaping and the like.

Welcome to TFF!

:D found you

if you can give your tank specs and test results then maybe we can see if you have a water quality issue. as your tank is really new there could be ammonia or nitrite problems.
some fish jump out because they can, please dont be too hard on yourself.

Just about every fish owner has had a fish jump out at some point. I have had a bunch of guppies jump out and found them dried up on the floor as far as 3 feet away from the tank. Its a fish's nature reaction to jump, sometimes they see a bug and try to get it. In the wild they would just flop back into the water but obviously that doesn't happen in a tank. Its sad but it happens, the most we can do is try to block up as much of the top as possible.

Thanks for the advice. Will test the tank water and get back to you. It is a fairly small tank, 60cm long x30cm deep x30cm wide. :thumbs:have tested water -ph7.5 ammonia nil nitrites 0.7. Have 6 plants in the tank from day one, 2 synchonium pixies, 1 swordplant a fern and 2 more mixed. Fish feeding well on 1 small pinch a day. What do others call a small pinch by the way? 3 flakes/6 flakes? A bit confusing. I keep adding a couple of flakes till the fish loose interest.

My flying fox does it quite often :) Whenever I open the hood to feed them he is looking for an opportunity to jump !!! He has done it 3 times.... I am more ready these days to catch him :)

I had my first jumper the other day, a young male platy somehow found his way out of a inch square hole and onto the glass top of the tank. I searched for him for 2 days expecting to find him stuck to a filter intake, and when I went to adjust the heater down just a bit, there he was.
