I have had illnesses killing fish past week.

One was either Velvet or Ich, I treated that, no such symptoms anymore (touch wood),

The other is unknown: starts with lethargy, not eating, pregressively getting worse, death within 24 hours.

Finally yesterday a neon tetra I have had for years and is the largest of the neons, has developed fat lips, but is otherwise OK swimming happily about. Not sure if he is eating well. Fat lips persist today does not seem to have changed.

If you have any ideas please tell me.

I forgot to follow the correct format, apologies.

Tank size: 180 lt (48 gallons) community 45+ fish
pH: 7.9-8.2
ammonia: 0.25-0.5 ppm
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 5
kH:
gH:
tank temp: 25-26 C

Volume and Frequency of water changes: twice a day trying to keep ammonia low as tank is being cycled. Using RO and tap water mix

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: aquasafe with tap water changes

Tank inhabitants: 6 neon tetras, 6 galaxy rasboras, 4 gold barbs, 4 black phantoms, 15 guppies, 3 mollies, 2 plecs, 2 dwarf guramis

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): 3 live plants and lots of new fish of all types

Exposure to chemicals: not known hopefully none

Cycling with fish is not simple nor easy. I am going to suggest you read both articles in the cycling section on Rescuing a Fish In Cycle Gone Wild. Pay particular attention toe Part II and how to deal with ammonia and nitrite.

What you are experiencing/learning is why doing a fishless cycle is highly preferred to doing it with fish in. Most new fish keepers who attempt a fish in cycle will have problems. Fish will be harmed, fish will be killed. For a long time there was no alternative to this. Today there is.
