Hi all,

I received my new Juwel 180 tank today and wanted some advise on the filter. Firstly where would you suggest i put my already cycles media? (from my old tank) How would i actually add the cycled media? also do i need to change the filters as regularly as advised in the manual?

Here is a PDF link to the filter i have

Many thanks

No, you don't need to change them as often as the manual says. Just keep the sponge ones until they start falling apart.. but clean as and when needed. The carbon sponges and the green can be replaced for some different media and just use the carbon as and when needed. Like to take out tannings for example. I'd look at adding some cirax media http://www.juwel-aquarium.de/en/cirax549.htm and another fine blue sponge myself.

As for using your mature media, I'm sure you have a space between the bottom basket and the top basket in your Juwel filter? You can just place it there. Depending on what your mature media is, you may need to use a net or something to house it in, then remove it all once you are sure yu're cycled.

Hi,

I used to have a juwel internal filter.

Does yours have just 1 fine blue sponge and 1 course blue sponge?
or does it have 2 fine blue sponges and 1 course blue sponge?

Also if yours has the black carbon sponge then you can leave that out as its not required on a daily basis (its only used for removing chemicals such as medications from the water) so that will give you a bit of extra room but try get the mature media inbetween or around the blue sponges as these are your media that will grow most of the benefical bacteria.

No, you dont need to change the media as instructed in the manual. The one that will require replacing regularly is the filter wool, I'd replace this every 2-4 weeks depending on how fast it gets clogged up. The rest of the pads only need replacing when they are literally falling apart which is usually every few years, these just need cleaning in old tank water when your filter is cleaned and pop them back in.

I have the 2 x fine blue and 1 x coarse, I will want to keep the carbon filter in for a couple of weeks as i am adding a new substrate, rocks and wood so may need to get rid of some tannins and other detritus from this, The Mature media i have is only small as it is from my 48 liter Interpret PF1 filter so i should be able to squeeze it in somewhere.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'd recommend you put the mature media inbetween the 2 fine blue sponges then.

Leaving the carbon in will be ok, it wont have any adverse effects, just remember whenever you need to treat the tank with medications that any active carbon is removed.
