i have been offered an 8 inch green terror but having never kept a GT before and from what i have read i have my doubts about them.....

i am thinking of adding another fish in with my oscar to stop his sulking since removing all the other cichlids from his tank but would the green terror be suitable or not?

i know it depends on individual fish temperament but i obviously wont know this until i add the GT....

I was in the same situation and was advised heavily against the green terror. As you said though it all depends on the fish.

Severums are a great tank mate for an Oscar :)

I say try it mate. If it comes to it you can always shift him on surely. If your paying for it (i assume) then shift him on at the same price. If he's free, definately try it and then shift him on for £££ it doesnt work out anyway. Cichlids lol, you can read so much about them and still never know what they're like untill you buy and get to know your own.

Obviously they are both big fish, so you have to be carefull and do it properly. Perhaps have put a temporary divider in the tank so they can see each other for a while first. That way you'll see if they show aggression to one another before they physically come into contact.

here is a pic of the fish and it is a beauty......

Oh wow, Matt. When it looks that good you have to try. You'll kick yourself if you don't, atleast if it doesnt work you can say your tried and it wasnt to be.

Thats a beaut!

I tried an oscar once with a gt (oscar was a little smaller).
The GT was pretty chilled out with it for the first few months, until the oscar pushed his luck abit and kept going for him.
After a little while the GT eventually had enough and went on the rampage and i had to seperate them, so i'd keep an eye out.

Good luck though, it'll look awesome if they get along :good:

GT's are extremely variable (even more than most cichlids) in their temperament.

It sounds like it's worth a try, so long as you have a plan B.

Extremely doubtful IME, In this instance the GT is fully mature (or there abouts) so I doubt it would take long for you to see if it is a success (or IMO a failure)

Also a question you have to ask is, If its such a Beauty - Why is someone looking to get rid?

My Oscar is a beaut, and has been kept with moonlight gourami's and firemouths ect. No issues. I am selling him currently because i'm having a change in direction with the tank he is in, and also cutting down my tanks from 6, to a more convenient 3.

Doesnt mean the GT is a terror, which is what i think your getting out. Yes, its a possibility, but not a dead cert.

Considering the species I'd say more than likely though, Not to mention Oscars and Green Terrors are notoriously bad tankmates

wow it is a beauty

Your going to have to suck it and see. oscars are funny creatures. I kept some that were very placid then for whatever reason they turned on a sysnpilum I had and it was a nasty combination which had to be removved in the end

Agreed Davo, i just wanted to point out that you can't assume wholely that this is going to be the case.

Cichlids a re fickle creatures - Thats what i love about them. The fact they can all get along and one day one has a strop with just one fish. I love it  Sure it make sit hard sometimes, but its all part of the fun/joy with them.

well ive spoken to the guy who currrently has the GT and he is selling it along with a few others to reduce tanks to please his wife

im picking it up tomorrow after work as he is only a few minutes detour on my way home :hyper:

fingers crossed it works out ok for the fish, its gonna go 1 way or the other i guess

ill get some pics and info posted over the weekend :good:

I'll be glued to the computer at the weekend waiting then :p Not literally, but i might aswell be
