im moving into a new apartment soon and i want to get myself a 55 gallon tank. when i do im thinking about putting nothing in it but one small jack dempsey (about 3-4 inches) and about 8 giant danios.

in a well decorated tank with no other competing fish to cause stress, do you think this would lengthen the dempseys life span? i just want to keep a big cichlid for a very long time.

how long can i expect the guy to live? and are there any other similar cichlids that are hardier, and/or that have a longer life expectancy?

Sounds like a brilliant plan :) JDs at a guessed based on life spans of similar fish would be about 7-10 years so would be a long term commitment :) How many liters is the 55g and is the 55 USG or 55 UKG as if you got the 65g Fluval Roma 240 you could get a Green Terror with the dithers you mentioned :)

thank you wills. the tank would be 55 us gallons. after caring for a smaler community tank for a couple of years now i really want something that would be very low maintenance. I don't want to deal with breeding, aggression problems, sick fish, territory issues, or plants. lol but i would like a large cichlid tank. so i believe this is the best way to go. green terrors are nice but they dont interest me in the way a jack dempsey does. are there any dithers that would be more appropriate for a single dempsey? a group of 12 tiger barbs maybe?

That sounds like a lovely set up, a JD is a very lovely fish to keep, I really adore my Rainbow as the kids named him. I think you could get away with tiger barbs as dithers, they are fast enough.

Giant Danios, Filament Barbs would be good choices...JD aren't as aggro as some other cichlids, but when kept in solitary and cichlid can 'own' the tank

is there any way to sex them when they're young? being that he'll be the only cichlid in the tank i want to make sure i get a male that'll grow large and colorful. what are signs of healthy hardy juvenile male jack dempseys?
