me and my dad have decided to make a BioTope aquarium based around the Rio Negro in Brazil. the tank is fifty US gallons, and will have gravel substrate, unfortunately we can't get sand. because it's going to be gravel we'd like to cover the bottom in leaves; could someone supply a picture of a good leaf to use? i'm not very good with recognizing trees, you see. we're also hoping to get our fins on Amazon Sword plants, Camboba and Vallisnera.

now then, i've been searching for fish that will 'get along' together that come from the Rio Negro, and i've come up with the following. please, could anyone point out any possible mishaps, mistakes, or painful fishies waiting to happen?

2-4 Angelfish
2 Blue Rams
10-20 Black Widow Tetras
5-10 Bronze Cories
5-10 Jewelled Cories
1-2 Bristlenose Plecos

i was wodnering why u wanetd so many cories...... i mean wouldn't u rateh rthey took uop less space also bug warning.... if u get rams and they might start breeding they will attack ur cories cos they don't like catfish!!! at breeding time lol so why dont u just have five of each kind :D then u have more sapce for more great tetras lol if looks like bit of a full tank ...maybe if u took away quater form each number (full number) eg. 15 tetras 7 cories ??? just surgestions  :D and btw sounds an extremly cool tank gd luck

:fish: Why don't you just skip the rams, as has already been suggested. Then, maybe instead of the bristlenose, for color, you could go with 3 zonancistrus pulcher(L168) which my local fish store called clown plecs. These plecs are small and much more colorful/interesting than the bristlenose, the clowns are golden-orange w/ black stripes(at night, when the lights are out, they turn solid black).

I am the king of overstocking my agauriums, so I'm not gonna say much on the numbers of fish you're going with in a 50 gallon tank....just be prepared to do an extraordinary number of water changes to keep your levels in check. Check www.fishprofiles.com for more info (w/pictures) on rio negro fishes.

Also, send a PM to ken_g_w, he does leaves in his awesome aquarium. Too, post a piture when you're done, I'm anxious to see more aquariums using natural leaves. :D

Here's my L-168

Most people think plecs are ugly, but to me they are really cool looking.

Ditto I love plecos, used to have a sailfin pleco several years ago
Sailfin's are great! They grow rather large don't they?

we've decided on our fish! ^^ we're going for a more general Venezuela thing, since the fish *I* want to get isn't from the Rio Negro, and the fish my *DAD* wants isn't from the Rio Negro, and the only scavenger we like isn't from the Rio Negro!

instead, we're going with:

2 Blue Ram Cichlids (M/F pair, hopefully)
30+ Neon Tetras
6 Otocinclus

the fish will all be kept happy, healthy, and warm. ^^ if my dad lets me i'll be giving my gallon quarantine tank (since i'm not getting any more fish for my community after my male Platy) to my brother and he'll be buying three Guppies, we're both going to breed livebearers for food for the larger fish (Rams, Bettas, Goldfish)

does that sound alright? my dad isn't going to explode if a few Neons go missing, he knows fish eat fish and that's how it is, but will my Rams go on a rampage and destroy the Neons, Otos, and tank?

cardinal tetras.  they're so colorful and they're really cool in shoals

Neon tetras are native to the rio solimoes
