30 Gallon African Cichlid Tank

I have an empty 30 gallon fish tank and was wondering if I could keep African cichlids in it successfully. If so what is a good number. Thanks.

You could keep some of the smaller Tangs - a nice colony of shell dwellers.
It's a bit small for any of the Malawis.
