25 Gal Shrimp Tank

Hi there! I have just got back into fishkeeping aout 8 months ago - i bought a nano to house some shrimp, but i got the itch and couldn't stop buying more! Time to upgrade!

I picked up a 110 litre juwel tank and stand, with new filter and header for just £90 on ebay, perfect condition so straight onto seeding!

I bought a 3D "rock canyon" background, my boyfriend cut it down and sealed it into the tank.

stage one... waiting for the sealent to dry! (my nano next door, housing my shrimp)

stage two... waters in! old filter is supplying bacteria, added old substrate and plants, added 3 cherry shrimp, will hold off adding more shrimp until tank is stable

Ha, i get that response alot in LFS, they can't seem to understand why i'm not filling it with fish XD

I've always loved the oddball creatures, i've kept frogs, crabs, now it's shrimp

I currently have cameroon, bamboo cherries and japonicas - once my boyfriend lets me spend more money (XD) i'm going to get some pearls and some tigers. ^^

I'm not going to buy too many, as hopefully my cherries will breed (one is already carrying a clutch)

I'll upload more pictures when i have some progress, theres currently a bacteria bloom going on so you can't see alot!

Sounds brilliant. Are you going for a planted tank or lots of wood and moss? I wish I had a shrimp tank that big. I used to keep cherries, but they were like rabbits. I keep black crystals at the moment which are nice. I am going to be setting a tank up for tigers once I have rehomed my betta.

I saw them yesterday on ebay, they are gorgeous. Shame about the price though. It would cost at least a ton to get a group of a decent size for breeding.

is that kesgrave tropicals? their my LFS and i've seen them in the tanks, very pretty!

Yes it's heavily planted with moss, plants and bogwood, i would post a pic, but i can't get a clear one yet as theres lots of oxygen and bacteria working itself out in there! its 50% clearer today so hopefully tommorow!

I'm hoping my cherries breed well, as they are such a striking red colour, i can see them from the opposite side of the room!

yes its kesgrave.I fell in love when i saw them but my little tank is still cycling so i have to wait. im actually still figuring out what fish to put with the shrimp. so far i have emerald dwarf rasboras. been toying with the idea of peacock gobies but i dont want the shrimp getting eaten

Yep, Gobies would snack on most dwarf Shrimp for fun. I have two river Gobies and they are true carnivores who even attack my Minnows at feeding time. To be honest, if you are going to get the red rili Shrimp, it would be a shame not to give them a species only / dedicated Shrimp tank. That way, they will feel more secure and are more likely to breed. If they do breed, the shrimplets are then more likely to survive.

Ohh Kesgraves are you LFS, thats interesting. I am wanting some Tigers off them soon. What do they look like in the tanks? Decent colouration and healthy?

could i risk at least some dwarf rasboras ?

If you have not seen shrimplets from dwarf Shrimp before, then they are a couple of mm when they first 'arrive'. You could keep a small shoaling fish with them, but they would almost certainly trim the numbers down. If you are not wanting to breed them then this might be a good thing. I suppose it depends on what your aims are with the tank

I started with 20 Red Cherries last Feb and when I decided to finish breeding and selling them in November, I had shifted well over 400. Now I am not saying that the Rili will breed as prolifically, but it is worth thinking about as you could sell them on at a couple of quid each quite easily...

No probs. The water around our way is good for breeding dwarf shrimp (especially the ones that are slightly harder to breed). They like it soft and slightly acidic you see.
